About 150 people, many of them journalists from the Perkin era, gathered in the new Wheeler Centre at the back of the State Library in Melbourne on Tuesday May 4 for the official launch of Ben’s new book ‘Breaking News -- The golden age of Graham Perkin.’’ Henry Rosenbloom, the publisher of Scribe Publications, compered proceedings, and the book was launched by Eric Beecher, a former Perkin reporter, former editor (of the Sydney Morning Herald and The Melbourne Herald) and current publisher of the online newsletter Crikey.com. A videoclip of stills and a short extract of an interview with Perkin from an ABC Chequerboard programme was shown. Mayu Kanamori edited the video (click on the play button under the image to the right to play the video). Tea and raspberry and coconut slices were served.

On the Friday (May 7) The Age staged a special two-hour event to celebrate Graham Perkin’s legacy and reflect on the future of newspapers. More than 100 people attended, including a number of former Perkin journalists and senior writers and editors from The Age’s current staff. The event was compered by the paper’s editor-in-chief, Paul Ramadge, and the keynote speaker was the distinguished journalist, author and historian Les Carlyon. Pumpkin scones, jam and cream were served.
Ben tries to sell a few more books. Age editor-in-chief Paul Ramadge talks about the challenge of editing five newspapers -- the print version and online editions for home computers, the i-pad, mobile phones ... and Twitter. Les Carlyon speaks about the changing face of newspapers -- and what Perkin would have made of it.
